Frequently Asked Questions About Back Pain Answered by our Queens, NY Chiropractor

Back pain is one of the most common reasons many people seek out chiropractic care. At Dr. Lee's Spine Center, we treat many patients suffering from back pain, often caused by underlying issues with their spine, caused by both injuries and chronic conditions. Dr. James Lee, our Queens, NY chiropractor has provided the answers to frequently asked these questions he receives about back pain and chiropractic care.

What are Common Causes of Back Injuries?

People often injure themselves in traumatic ways such as auto accidents or sports accidents, or work or home accidents from falls or pulling a muscle or straining a ligament when lifting--all of which can lead to back injuries and pain. Lifting something too heavy or twisting or turning too quickly can cause a pulled muscle, as can jarring motions from a car accident or sports injury. Repetitive motions can also injure the neck or lower spine.

What Conditions Cause Pain?

We see many patients who have arthritis or poor posture, both of which can cause back pain. Prolonged sitting, slouching or hunching forward makes the shoulders and head tilt forward, weakening the curved structure of the spine and causing neck or lower back pain. As people age, many develop arthritis of the vertebrae, leading to decreased range of motion and weakened bone which can press on nerves.

How Do I Know if I Have a Herniated Disc?

Many patients never know they have a herniated or bulging disc because there are no symptoms. Disc injuries can often heal on their own, but sometimes the ruptured disc will press on nearby nerves, causing pain.

Can Lifestyle Choices Decrease my Back Pain?

Poor posture, being overweight and lack of exercise can all lead to back pain. If you continuously bend and lift, you are more at risk for wear and tear on your discs and vertebrae.

Is my Back Pain Associated with Other Pain I’m Feeling?

Many of our patients complain of a dull backache, and sometimes report pain that radiates into the pelvis and the hips. Sometimes, the pain is accompanied by muscle spasms or is a sharp, tingling, pins-and-needles sensation that travels from the back into the legs and feet. This tingling that radiates down into the legs is called sciatica; these symptoms occur due to irritation of the sciatic nerve, and patients usually only feel the sensation on either the left or right side.

Is it Normal for Back Pain to Come and Go Throughout the Day?

Back pain frequently becomes worse as a person sits for long periods because sitting puts added pressure on the discs.  Many patients say their back pain is worst first thing in the morning, but better after they get up and move around.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

Chiropractic care is a non-invasive,  non-surgical form of care to alleviate back pain. Chiropractic treatment is designed to correct the underlying spinal problem that is causing your pain.
