Herniated Disc - Dr. Lee's Spine Center Queens, NY

The intervertebral discs in your back are a type of cartilaginous joint tissue that sits between the vertebrae. Discs absorb shock, separate the vertebrae and make movement smooth and painless. The inside of the disc is filled with a soft tissue called the Nucleus Pulposus. It is this soft inner layer of the disc that provides most of the disc's cushion. The entire disc has been described as a sponge surrounded by a cartilaginous ring. The disc is composed of proteins called collagen and proteoglycans that attract water and nutrients.

Discs don't have access to a blood supply but absorb water and nutrients through a process known as "imbibition". They are said to "bulge," "slip," "rupture" or "herniate" when the inner softer layer (Nucleas Pulposus) of the disc tissue pushes out past the harder cartilage tissue (Annulus Fibrosus) through cracks in the outer ring. Some bulging with age is not unusual. However, when the bulge goes too far the pain can be severe and this is called a herniated disc. When a disc ruptures the pain is caused from the disc either pinching the nerve root itself or from the inflammation. Chiropractic care and rehabilitation are recommended to help with the condition.

Herniated discs often start gradually with disc degeneration and mild pain and then progressively worsen. Often a traumatic episode or accident will cause a disc that is already suffering from degeneration to rupture. The risks of disc degeneration are increased by a sedentary lifestyle and dehydration.

Queens Herniated Disc Treatment includes Chiropractic Care and Rehabilitation

When our chiropractor treats a herniated disc it is called conservative care because the chiropractor uses a program of adjustments to improve and heal the disc as opposed to intrusive surgical methods. First, our chiropractor will diagnose the injury by evaluating your symptoms using medical and chiropractic diagnostic tools. Symptoms of a ruptured disc can include back pain, neck pain, shooting leg or arm pain, muscle weakness and bowel or bladder problems.

Dr. Lee uses Non-surgical Spinal Decompression to treat the root cause of the herniated disc and provide pain relief. Research has shown that Non-surgical Spinal Decompression is one of the most effective treatments for a herniated disc. The pressure creates a vacuum- like effect that sucks the soft tissue of the disc back into position. This in turn relieves the pressure on the nerve, provides pain relief and regenerates the disc.

Dr. Lee's office is conveniently located in the heart of Jamaica, Queens New York. As a chiropractor, Dr. Lee is dedicated to helping his patients live pain free lives and he has extensive experience with herniated discs. He will set up a healing program for your ruptured disc that has two objectives: First, Dr. Lee will try to relieve the pain and encourage the disc to return to its correct position and second, he will establish a program of chiropractic adjustments, muscle strengthening and exercises to increase the elasticity of the discs in your back to prevent further disc degeneration.
